Interview with Gundam Wing Executive Producer

Anime News Network posted an interview with Gundam Wing executive producer Hideyuki Tomioka which includes interesting tidbits:

What was most surprising about the whole thing is that this was the only thing that they requested. They didn’t give any instruction or direction in terms of the story or plot. All they said is, “We want five mobile suits, and we want those five mobile suits to be so spectacular that they sell a lot of merch, and that’s it.” So, that was kind of unique. Of course, now they say what type of story they want to be told and what type of characters they want to be included, but back then, that was it. Just five mobile suits.

Seems there was a bit more creative freedom back then. Although, we’re uncertain how controlled modern series are, it could range from simply saying a nebulous “We want X type of series with these types of characters” to micromanaging it; there’s really no way to know.

TV Tokyo Gets Serious About Licensing

TV Tokyo is reorganizing on June 27 and part of that involves creating a new licensing division with a focus on revenues from streaming and foreign businesses. The three departments of the division will be: Content operations, anime and international planning.

It seems Japan is increasingly taking the foreign market more seriously. Whether that is going to be good or bad will depend on how they handle it.
