Western Pressures on Anime (Update)
A while ago when I wrote this article I said that it wasn’t just traditional otaku entertainment aimed at men that was in danger, that women-aimed entertainment was also at stake. First Love Monster is an anime aimed at a female audience however it did not escape Western criticisms due in part to its premise (Boys in men’s bodies). As I said, Western media will not discriminate between female and male oriented entertainment because their problem is not with whom anime is aimed at, it is with the fact that it is a niche hobby that does not conform to predetermined, socially accepted, Western standards and therefore Western feminists, who do not share the tastes and appreciation of anime that female otaku (geeks) do, will pursue their political agenda in shaming and trying to change women-aimed entertainment as well; or at least, until such a time as anime aimed at girls are no longer deemed “problematic”.
